The invention relates to devices and methods for controlling a brake system (4), especially for motor vehicles, in order to perform a braking assistance function. The movement of a brake pedal (1) by the driver is detected by a displacement sensor (2) and transferred to the braking system (4) via a signal line (3). A control unit (5) can either modify or reduce a damping effect and/or a counterforce of the brake pedal (1) and/or increase a system reinforcement effect according to the movement of the brake pedal (1) as detected by the displacement sensor (2), in order to reduce the braking distance of the motor vehicle safely and comfortably. In particular, the driver exercises total control over the braking process, even when the braking assistance function is activated.
