A highly porous product is produced by mixing a powder or granulate with a solution of an Al, Ca, Mg, P, Si, Ti or Zr oxide in specific amounts and drying the gel obtained. Production of a highly porous solid comprises: (a) homogeneously mixing 0.2 g to 12 g of a powder or granulate with 1 ml of a solution of an oxide of Al, Ca, Mg, P, Si, Ti or Zr in water or an alcohol, preferably water-ethanol, in which the oxide:solvent molar ratio is 1:4-30; (b) drying the moist granulate obtained, preferably at room temperature, until about 90% of solvent has been removed; and (c) heating the dried granulate at 200 deg C after heating up at a rate of 1 degree/minute.
