In a process to generate smoke as part of a food smoking process, a wheel (1) with a pref. diamond or hard metal insert friction surface (22) with a rounded outer contour, is applied to a suitable material esp. a block of wood. The two are rubbed together. Some wood cells detach from the block and form a layer on the friction surface (22). The layer is applied to and rubbed against the wood block, which smolders and smokes.
