The image tube comprises a wire cathode (1) from a central, compact wire from a resistive metal, alloy, or combination material, and an electron-emitting cover layer mounted rotation-symmetric on the wire cathode. The cover layer (3) consists of particles with a size of 1-100 nm, and a porosity of 10-60 percent, containing at least one metal and at least one oxide combination.
