The system includes an obstacle detection device (12), e.g. a laser radar, for detecting an obstacle, such as a further vehicle, which lies in front on a path of the vehicle, and operating devices (16) for operating a brake system (22) of the vehicle, to avoid a contact with the obstacle. The operating devices operate the brake system based on an evaluated probability of a contact, when the obstacle recorded through the detection devices is lost.
