The exit section (27) of the rotor (4) has spiral flights (34) to direct the material radially outwards towards the outlet (15). The flights are at an angle of 30 - 70 deg and can be combined with a length of parallel flight on the upstream side. Independent claims are also included for extruders using rotors having an exit section either with spiral flights, or a combination of spiral and parallel flights.
