The external rear view vehicle mirror (1) has a heated layer (4) of nonwoven material, of electroconductive and non-metallic fibres, embedded in a plastics layer (42). The heated layer, as a resistance heater, is connected to the vehicle electrical power system. The heating layer (4) fibres are of carbon (41), produced from a polyacrylnitrile precursor. The plastics layer (42) is a resin, and especially an epoxy resin, or it is an adhesive film applied to the heated layer.
