A refuse disposal system eg. for an apartment block, has a pivot mounted door (1) which is pulled forward to open a loading bin. The bin is pushed back and drops the refuse into the vertical shaft (4) leading to the refuse container. The door is fitted with a security lock and with a counter to measure the number of times the chute is used ie. to monitor the amount of refuse dumped. The counter is linked to a mechanical ratchet which prevents partial opening and closing, ie. prevents circumventing the counter. The door can be operated by a key, a chip card or by coins.
