Chemical sensitization of silver halide emulsions containing >= 95 mole% silver chloride (AgCl) with divalent selenium (Se) or tellurium (Te) compounds is carried out in the presence of a mercapto-benzoxazole, -benzothiazole, -benzimidazole, -benzoxathiole, -benzodioxole, -benzodithiole, -benzoxazine, -benzothiazine, -benzodiazine, -benzoxathiin, -benzodioxin or -benzodithiin compound (I) as stabilizer. Sensitization of silver halide emulsions containing >= 95 mole% silver chloride (AgCl) with divalent selenium (Se) or tellurium (Te) compounds is carried out in the presence of a mercapto-benzoxazole, -benzothiazole, -benzimidazole, -benzoxathiole, -benzodioxole, -benzodithiole, -benzoxazine, -benzothiazine, -benzodiazine, -benzoxathiin, -benzodioxin or -benzodithiin compound of formula (I) as stabilizer. X1, X2 = nitrogen (N), oxygen (O) or sulfur (S) in a 5- or 6-membered ring; and R = hydrogen (H), halogen, hydroxysulfonyl (SO3H) or methoxy (OCH3).
