1,262,814. Melt-spinning apparatus. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 5 Feb., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 5527/70. Heading B5B. Synthetic polymers are melt-spun through a spinneret with the orifices being spaced apart a distance within the range of from 3À5 to 10 mm., measured from orifice centre to orifice centre, whilst blowing a stream of a gaseous cooling medium on to the filaments at an angle of between 80 and 150 degrees to the direction of movement of the filaments, wherein' a narrow stream of hot gas or vapour having a temperature within the range of from 120‹ to 250‹ C. is passed between the stream of cooling medium and the spinneret during the spinning process, which stream of hot gas or vapour protects the spinneret from being cooled by the stream of gaseous cooling medium directed at the spun filaments. The preferred temperature of the hot gas lies between 150‹ and 200‹ C. The gaseous cooling medium is preferably directed perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the filaments. The filaments may be given a latent crimp by directing the coolant at them from one side. The process is exemplified by use with polyethylene terephthalate. Steam may be used as the cooling medium. Specifications 1,262,811, 1,262,812 and 1,262,813 are referred to. |
