The invention relates to a system for managing data related to multimedia carriers such as CDs. The system comprises a player which maintains a local database containing data related to multimedia carriers in a collection. After insertion of a multimedia carrier, it is identified by the player which then searches the local database for data related to the multimedia carrier. If no data is found, the player contacts a central database in order to download data related to the multimedia carrier and store it in the local database.
