An illumination system (100) for a projector (2-4), and associated method, for generating an arcuate band of light (6), including an angular integrator (120), an image dissector (121) and a relay (104) and remapper (105). The angular integrator (120) includes a first face (131), a second face (132), and a plurality of triangular grooves (133) longitudinally extending along the first face (131) and the second face (132). The triangular grooves (133) are separated in the transverse direction by gaps (134), and the triangular grooves (133) on the first face (131) lie in a substantially orthogonal direction to the triangular grooves (133) on the second face (132). The image dissector (121) includes an input face (157), an output face (158), and a plural elements (159-163) that redirect light from the input face (157) to the output face (158). The output face (158) has a substantially rectangular shape that is different than that of the input face (157). At least one of the plural elements (159-163) has at least one coating that reduce optical transmission efficiency of the element. The relay (104) and remapper (105) include a lens system (231-245) and a parabolic mirror (246). The lens system has a highly curved field that distorts the substantially rectangular-shaped band of light into a curved image whose radius of curvature is the same as the arcuate band of light (6). The parabolic mirror (246) has a latus rectum that is approximately equal to a curvature of the substantially arcuate band of light (6) and has a cross section at the latus rectum. |
