The invention relates to a method and a device for operating a display device for mobile telecommunications terminals, especially mobile telephones, comprising a driving circuit which drives the display device. The driving circuit triggers or carries out a change in the presentation mode and a selection of alphanumeric characters and/or symbols on the display device once it has been established by means of a recognition circuit that the telecommunications terminal is located in a defined place. The driving circuit reduces the character set to be presented to the information necessary for operations and brings about an enlarged presentation of said selected characters on the display device if the telecommunications terminal is located in a telephone holder of a motor vehicle or such like.
