1374091 Conveying letters &c.; sorting letters MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 17 Jan 1972 [16 Jan 1971] 2226/71 Heading B8A A letter sorter comprises a series of modules A, B, C (Fig. 2) each having a respective conveyer, chain driven from a sprocket on the next adjacent upstream module. Each conveyer comprises spaced endless belts 20, 20, carrying pushers 25 (Fig. 4) for engaging the edge of a letter lying with its long edge transversely of the conveyer. Each pusher 25 has corrugations which co-operate with correspondingly recessed portions of a conveyer base-plate 40, and depending frame members 43. Loops 49 of each pusher 25 extend around fingers 50 of a flap 14 associated with each sorting box 12. Each letter is accelerated at the moment of transfer from one module to the next by virtue of the provision of a 9 drum 30 concentric with the pulleys around which the belts 20 pass at each end of their travel. The diameter of this drum is such that it provides a higher peripheral speed than the conveyer speed. A roller 31 is spring urged into engagement with the drum 30. A detection device for indicating jamming of the conveyer, is the same as that described in Specification 1,374,092. |
