PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound useful as a polymerization catalyst for olefin, giving a (co)polymer having freely controllable molecular weight and producing a wide variety of polyolefins. SOLUTION: This compound contains a skeleton unit expressed by formula (Q is a bivalent organic group or a group based on a group 14 atom; R<1> is H, hydrocarbyl or the like; M is scandium, yttrium or the like; T is oxidation state of M and is II or more; X is a unidentate or bidentate atom or group bonded to M through covalent bond or ionic bond; L is a unidentate or bidentate molecule bonded to M through dative bond; (n) is 0-5), e.g. 3,5-di-t-butylsalicyl- N-2,4,6-trimethylphenylaminozirconium dimethylamide. The exemplified compound can be produced from 3,5-di-t-butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 2,4,6- trimethylaniline through 3,5-di-t-butylsalicyl-N-2,4,6-trimethylphenylamine.
