PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a transmission light in weight, and simple in structure by dispensing with hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic pumps or power clutches, to reduce the consumption of electric power for an automobile by eliminating the loss in output of an engine for driving the pumps, to let the high efficiency of the transmission be exhibited, and let the automobile be smoothly started or stopped in operation when a belt type continuously variable transmission in which a belt is wound and installed between a driving and a driven pulley, which are formed out of speed change pulleys, is loaded onto the automobile. SOLUTION: Cam mechanisms 40 and 50 driving the respective movable sheaves of pulleys are interlocked by means of an electric motor, a driving the clutch-off cam surface 47 which is tilted at an inclined angleθ1 smaller than that of a speed change cam surface 43, is provided for the cam 41 of the driving side cam mechanism 40 in such a way as to be made continuous to the low speed end 43a of the cam surface 43, and a driven side clutch-off cam surface 57 is provided for the cam 51 of the driven side cam mechanism 50, which is formed out of a plane perpendicularly intersected with an output shaft in such a way as to be made continuous to the low speed end 53a of a cam surface 53.
