The metallurgical coke or briquetted carbonaceous material charged with the oxidised Zn and Zn/Pb, is treated by immersion in aqueous mineral acid e.g. boric acid, or soluble salt such as CaO, Ca(OH)2, Na silicate. This reduces its activity at, or up to 1000 degrees C., so that more use can be made of the C in the charge to produce heat and reduce the ZnO, rather than produce Co. An alternative coating is tar or pitch, which may be volatilised to fill in the pores in the coke or briquettes.
|
