PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the presence of an adjacent occupant during deployment of an air bag and accurately control the inner pressure of the air bag in accordance with the detection result. SOLUTION: A control valve 30 formed by adhering a plate piezoelectric element 31 to a metal protector 32 and a vent hole 29 opened/closed by the control valve 30 are provided on a retainer 19 for supporting an inflator 20 and an air bag 21 for an air bag device. The inner pressure of the air bag 21 at the beginning of development is detected by an inner pressure detecting means 35f. If the inner pressure is higher than usual, the presence of an adjacent occupant is judged and the piezoelectric element 31 is curved with power supply to open the vent hole 29 for exhausting gas in the air bag 21 to the outside. When the adjacent occupant is present, the inner pressure of the air bag is decreased to restrain the occupant with proper restraining force. |
