1370663 Gunwale, seat or buoyant attachment H TREMPECK 28 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 45084/71 Headings B7S and B7U A support bolster for a sailing boat comprises a body made from a yieldable material and mountable on the side of a boat by fastening means defining a channel to receive and grip an edge portion of the side of the boat, the fastening means being so arranged in relation to the body that, when the latter is mounted by the fastening means on the side of the boat, the body occupies a position such that it can act as a shockabsorber against impacts and also as a support cushion for an operator positioned against the side of the boat. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a bolster comprises a body 1 retained on a washboard edge 2 by resilient clips 3 provided at each end of the body. Loops 4, 5 are provided to urge leg portions of the plastics-covered clips slightly apart to permit mounting of the bolster. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), part of the body (1) is cut away to form a back-rest for a person sailing and a chain (12) attached to the body (1) is connected by a loop (13) to the boat. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the bolster is in the form of a rotatable roll 16 mounted on a holder 17 which is provided with a spring clip 19 engageable over an edge 2. Adjustable braking devices 20 arrest or slow down the rotation of the roll 16. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, the bolster is mounted on an edge by suction cups 22 and is provided with a loop 23 which can be passed over a human head to enable the bolster to be used as a life saving device, Fig. 10 (not shown). Preferably, the bolster is filled with a foamed material and the suction cups 22 pass through an outer plastics covering 24 and are secured to plates 25. An adhesive may be applied to the interior of the suction cups, Fig. 9 (not shown). In a still further embodiment, Fig. 11, the bolster 29 is formed as a seat and may be fitted on a tube 28 of a rubber dinghy by resilient clips 32, 33. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 12, the bolster comprises two resilient body portions 34, 35 of which the portion 35 has a higher stiffness rating than the portion 34. In a further embodiment, Fig. 13, the bolster has a foamed plastics body 37 and a hollow portion enclosing an inflatable body 38. In another embodiment, Fig. 14, resilient clips 41 embrace the boat edge 42 and the bolster is fastened to the interior of the boat 43 by suction cups 44, 45 or fasteners provided with resilient heads sprung into complementary hollows in the side of the boat. A seat 46 for the user is provided. In any of the embodiments, the surface of the body may be covered with particles of luminous material. Also, the body may be covered by a detachable envelope provided with a zip fastener. |
