<p>A fuel element applicable to liquid metal cooled reactors in which the outer fuel element cladding is extended to enclose a concentric inner tube and forming a syphon loop containing liquid metal e.g. Pb, Bi or Tl. Sintered stainless steel flow restrictors are positioned at the upper end of the inner tube and annulus formed by the inner and outer tubes. Gaseous fission products escaping from the fuel accumulate in the gas chamber above the inner tube and below the fuel until sufficient pressure builds up to enable the gas flow through the restrictor and around the syphon loop, and pass through an outlet port in the outer cladding above the annulus restrictor.</p> |
