The bin has a seal(11) so that the lid(4) provides an airtight enclosure, a switch(12) energizes a vacuum pump(5) to evacuate the bin after the lid has been closed, and a timer or pressure switch(13) disengages the pump after the bin has been evacuated. A check valve(9) is provided between the vacuum pump and interior of the bin, and a ventilating valve(15) opens when a handle(14) on the lid is operated. A switch is provided which disengages the pump if the lid is opened.
