[Also in Division D1] Communication cables are stranded together with periodic change in the direction of twist. Cores are fed into a stranding machine at 14, pass around roller 7 of a rotating sub-frame 2, pass around a temporary storage drum 9 that is free to rotate about its vertical axis but does not rotate with the subframe 2, leave the sub-frame and pass around rollers 8 of a second sub-frame 3 and leave the sub-frame 3 at 4 for winding. In use, and with sub-frames 2 and 3 rotating in one direction, the cores have a degree of twist imparted to them at 14 and a second degree of twist in the same direction imparted to them at 11, where they are fed to the store 9. When the store is full the direction of rotation of the sub-frames is reversed and the cores leaving the store 9 at 10 have a third degree of twist imparted to them, in the same direction as the first two degrees of twist and, as the cores leave the sub-frame 3 at 4, a fourth degree of twist is imparted to them. They are then wound on a reel. During the winding off the store 9 of the first length of cores a second length is wound on to the store with a change in direction of twist due to the reversal of rotation of the subframes and, when the store is again full, the direction of rotation of the sub-frames is again reversed so that, as the second length leaves the store, it is provided with the third and fourth degrees of twist in the same direction as its first two degrees and in the opposite direction to the direction of twist of the first length whilst a third length of cores, being wound on to the store, is receiving its first two degrees of twist in the same direction of twist as the first length. Instead of the direction of rotation of the subframes being reversed their speed of rotation may be changed. Various embodiments of temporary stores and sub-frames are described. Four such assemblies may be utilized (Fig. 4) to cable four strands 40 by way of a fifth assembly 43. |
