A polyester-acrylate binder with a hydroxyl number of 40-300, obtained by copolymerizing hydroxyalkyl methacrylate, vinylaromatic monomer(s), tert.-butyl methacrylate and optionally (meth)acrylic acid in a solution of hydroxy-functional polyester derived from neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane and hexahydrophthalic acid. Polyester-acrylate based binders with OH numbers of 40-300 mg KOH/g solid resin and acid numbers of 3-30 mg KOH/g, comprising (A) 10-90 wt% polyester with an OH number of 80-300, an acid number of 5-30 and a stoichiometrically calculated mol. wt. of 500-1500, derived from (a1) 5-55 mol% neopentyl glycol, (a2) 5-55 mol% trimethylolpropane and (a3) 38-52 mol% hexahydrophthalic acid and/or anhydride and (B) 10-90 wt% acrylic resin derived from (b1) 15-75 wt% hydroxyethyl and/or hydroxypropyl methacrylate, (b2) 30-85 wt% aromatic vinyl compound(s), (b3) 10-45 wt% tert.-butyl methacrylate and (b4) 0.0-5 wt% (meth)acrylic acid(s), obtained by polymerizing monomers (b1-b4) in presence of inert solvent and component (A). An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of these binders by heating polyester (A) with inert organic solvent(s) (b.pt. at least 140 deg C) to 180-210 deg C, adding the monomer mixture (b1-b4) and initiator(s) over 4-16 hours and then polymerizing for a further 2-6 hours at 180-210 deg C.
