A separation by chromatography using a packing material comprising an electrically charged copolymer is carried out in which a mobile phase is an aqueous phase and the effective charge density on the surface of a stationary phase can be changed by a physical stimulus. This method allows an efficient separation of biological components and the like, which may not be separated by ion exchange chromatography alone or reversed phase chromatography alone, without adversely affecting their activities.
