Apparatus for supplying power to a discharge lamp, such as a fluorescent lamp, includes a ballast (5), a detection device (6) and a voltage conversion circuit (4). The ballast (5) is adapted to receive an AC voltage from a primary power source (L1, N) and has an output (M3, M5) adapted to be coupled to a discharge lamp. The detection device (6) is also adapted to be coupled to the primary power source (L2, N). The voltage conversion circuit (4) is coupled to the detection device (6) and is also adapted to receive a low voltage DC input (13, 14) from a secondary power source (9) and output an AC output voltage to drive the discharge lamp. The detection device (6) detects a failure in the primary power source (L2, N) and in the event of a failure connects the voltage conversion circuit (4) to the secondary power source (9) to generate the AC output voltage.
