The method involves determining the exact position of each stopping point during a setting to work learning process and storing the corresp. counter values in the memory (68) of a control unit. Corresp. minimum distances for stopping points for different maximum cabin speeds are also stored in memory. Before each movement of the cabin the difference (54) is determined between the instantaneous cabin height and the height of the target stopping level. The absolute difference values are compared (60) with the stored stopping minimum distances and a corresp. maximum speed is output to control the lift drive. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the method.
