A dongle for a computer has a real time clock source and a power supply for the source. The dongle connects to the printer port of a PC and on system start-up, a dongle control program is called and reads the time and date from the dongle real time clock source, and uses this information to set the PC's hardware real time clock and the operating system software clock. In this way, year 2000 compliance may be assured, for a PC which, by itself, is not fully compliant. Alternatively or additionally, a PC having an inaccurate or failed hardware real time clock may be caused to operate correctly.
