A hydrotreating process for a residual oil, more particularly, a process comprising hydrotreating a residual oil using a regenerated catalyst as a part of the catalyst for use in the process, wherein a hydrotreatment comprises denitrification and desulfurization, characterized in that it comprises passing the residual oil through a layer consisting solely of or containing as a part a regenerated catalyst which layer is arranged in a specific manner between new catalyst layers. The specific arrangement of a regenerated catalyst according to the invention allows a hydrotreatment as satisfactory as that using a new catalyst alone, resulting in providing an effective and advantageous use of a used catalyst.
