In a connection wherein a rotatable conduit member, e.g. drying drum 10, Fig. 1, is fluidtightly connected to and drives a nipple 35 rotatably mounted in a stationary conduit part, a combined pipe joint and detent clutch is provided between the nipple 35 and the rotatable member so that the two may be joined or separated while the member continues to rotate, the clutch mechanism being operated by a manually-operated means 46 which is movable axially with respect to the joint. In the embodiment shown, Fig. 2, an extension 34 of the nipple 35 has an enlarged end 42 counterbored at 44 to accept an extension 36 of the journal flange 20 of the drying drum 10. Fluid sealing is achieved by O-ring 64, and the overlapping of ring 68 prevents turbulence. Mechanical coupling is via balls 54 in radial bores 56 engaging in depressions 58 circumferentially spaced round extension 36. The depressions 58 are circumferentially elongated (Fig. 3, not shown) to assist location of the balls when the clutch is engaged by sliding the spring-pressed collar 46 into the position shown. To disengage the nipple 35 from the drum 10 the collar 46 is manually slid leftwards and the balls are cammed, by continued rotation of the drum, into groove 60. The arrangement is particularly suited to the drying rollers of paper-making machines so that the machine need not be stopped for repairs to rotary seal 28. |
