The present invention provides for a soil sterilizer and a method for sterilizing soil. The sterilizer comprises a steam generator, tilling device with a ramp for raising a top layer of soil and blades on a rotatable shaft for lifting the soil and projecting it through the air. The steam contacts the soil as it passes through the air and heats it to a temperature sufficient to kill pathogens in the soil. The soil is treated under a hood which keeps the steam in a contained space and allows the soil to heat up to the temperature of the steam.
