A transverse sealer for sealing a bag in a transverse direction after the bag has been filled with articles to be packaged. In order for a proper transverse seal appropriate to the thickness, width and/or type of material of the film (S) to be formed on the film (S), a pair of transverse sealing means (20) are disposed downstream of a former (2) for forming the film (S) into a specified shape. The pair of the transverse sealing means (20) are moved in an approach-separation direction towards and away from each other. A compression adjusting means (H, H1) is also provided for maintaining at a specified level a compressive force with which the transverse sealing means (20) sandwich the film (S) during thermal sealing. The compression adjusting means (H, H1) includes an approach-separation motor (40, 40A) for driving the pair of transverse sealing means (20) in the approach-separation direction, and a control means (53, 103) for causing the approach-separation motor (40, 40A) to rotate at a specified torque. <IMAGE> |
