A positive active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, the said material being composed of a layer-like structure composite oxide of the formula LixMyLz02, wherein M is a transition metal element and L is one or more elements selected from the group consisting of non-metal, metalloid and semi-metal elements selected from Groups IIIB, IVB and VB of the periodic table, alkaline earth metal elements and metal elements selected from Zn, Cu and Ti.
