PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate generation of an odorous gas of an organic solvent and aggregation of a lubricant because of the organic solvent, thereby uniforming a lubricant layer by applying the lubricant by dissolving the lubricant at a specific temperature without using the organic solvent in a process of forming the lubricant layer to a surface of either of a carbon film and a back coat layer. SOLUTION: A lubricant is supplied to a gravure roll 2 by a nozzle 1, measured by a blade 3 and transferred, applied onto a surface of a magnetic layer of a magnetic tape material roll 5. The lubricant is applied by dissolving the lubricant in a range from a melting point to +100 deg.C higher than the melting point by a heat energy supplied from a thermostat 8. The transferred, applied lubricant is further thinned and uniformed by smoothing bars 7 arranged between pass rolls 6, whereby a thickness of a lubricant layer is regulated from 10Åto 100Å. A contact face of the smoothing bar 7 to the magnetic tape material roll 5 is in a cylindrical shape or semi-cylindrical shape and can be provided with a sharp edge in some cases.
