PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive MR(magneto-resistance effect) head capable of preventing thermal asperity from occurring without requiring a complicated fabrication process. SOLUTION: An MR head is composed of a slider 11, a first insulating layer 12 formed to have a step with respect to an air lubricating surface of the slider 11, a reproducing device 2 composed of a lower shield 13, a reproducing gap 14, an MR device 15 and an upper shield 16 sequentially deposited on the first insulating layer 12, a recording device 3 composed of a recording gap 17 and a recording pole 18 sequentially formed on the upper shield 16, and a second insulating layer 19 formed on the recording pole 18. An angle (α) between a step (d) made by the reproducing device 2 with respect to the air lubricating surface of the slider 11 and the sum (t) of thicknesses of the first insulating layer 12 and the reproducing device 2 is 0.05 degrees or more.
