PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave device with low loss and without ripples by effectively arranging unidirectional IDT split electrodes. SOLUTION: This surface acoustic wave device for exciting surface acoustic waves is constituted of a piezoelectric substrate and plural IDT for transmission and reception arranged on the surface of the piezoelectric substrate. In this case, at least one of the IDT is constituted of an interdigital split electrode, in which two electrode fingers are arranged so as to be made alternately positive and negative as a pair. In the two electrode fingers of the split electrode, the width of a direction in which a surface acoustic wave is excited is made different, and an angleαmade by the direction of the width direction of the electrode finger from the electrode finger in which the reflectivity of the surface acoustic wave is small to the electrode finger in which the reflectivity is large among the two electrode fingers and the direction of the surface acoustic wave excited by the IDT constituted of the slip electrode toward the IDT for reception, is set such that 0<=α<90 deg..
