PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a time which is long enough to read an area to be recognized by making the time needed to discriminate a discrimination mark as short as possible and to make the processing speed of an optical reader faster by increasing the conveyance speed of a document. SOLUTION: This discriminating device is equipped with photodetecting elements D2 to Dn+1 for discrimination mark detection, two photodetecting elements D1 and Dn+2 for timing mark detection, a timing mark detecting circuit 11 which detects a timing mark T from the photodetection signals of the two photodetecting elements for timing mark detection, a binarizing circuit 13 which converts the photodetection signals of the photodetecting elements D2 to Dn+1 for discrimination mark detection to binary signals of multibit constitution when detecting the timing mark T, a register 14, and a discrimination mark recognizing circuit 15 which discriminates the top or reverse and the front or rear of the document by decoding the converted binary signals. |
