PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell capable of suppressing permeation of electrolyte and excellent in stability and durability, and its operating method. SOLUTION: A fuel cell stack is made up by alternately stacking four cells 9 and three separators 8a to 8c. Among the three separators 8a to 8c, the separator 8b present in the middle of the fuel stack is adapted to have the pore volume of 0.01 cc/g or less of pores with a radius of 1 μm or more and the pore volume of 0.07 cc/g or less of pores with a radius of 0.1 μm or more. Cover plates 12a to 12d are fused to both surfaces of cooling plates 10 with a fluororesin. A carbon plate similar to the separator 8b is used for the cover plate 12b, of the two cover plates, that abuts on a cathode reservoir 5. |
