The device for stretching the spine has telescopic units (10) attached to a support corset. The telescopic units consist of a body (12) in which an axially movable piston (14) is located, the upper end of which is connected to the upper part of the corset. The piston acts against a pressure spring (22) located in the body. The piston spreads the upper and lower sections of the corset apart. The piston can be held in the extended position by a mechanical retention element (32) which is a retaining loop hinged to the body which engages with a projecting pin (34) on the piston when in the extended position.
