What is claimed is a process for making a preparation of a 5-(alkoxymethyl)-2,3-pyridinedicarboximide compound, where the variables are as described in the specification. The process comprises reacting an oxime of 2-alkoxymethyl-2-propen-1-one with a substituted maleimide compound in the presence of an alkali metal acetate and a solvent at elevated temperature.
