PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a steel cord excellent in adhesion to a rubber. SOLUTION: This steel cord is the steel cord 3 of a 1×(n) lay structure prepared by laying (n) wires [(n) is an integer of 6-8] and has an elliptical cross section perpendicular to the major axis thereof. The ratio D1 /D2 of the major axis D1 to the minor axis D2 of the elliptical cross section, the wire diameter [d (mm)] of the wires 2 and the lay pitch P (mm) are respectively within the following ranges and the adjacent wires 2 along the outer periphery of the elliptical cross section form at least one gap having >=0.08 mm width based on 5 periods of the pitch P: 1.43<=D1 /D2 <=2.50, 0.15<=(d)<=0.29 and 30(d)<=P<=80(d).
