PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum refining method and a device therefor by which dipping depth can be adjusted with high precision when molten metal surface level rapidly fluctuates and even when slag thickness is uneven and fluctuation of slag surface level does not synchronize with fluctuation of the molten metal surface level. SOLUTION: A molten metal surface level variation calculating part 6 calculates a molten metal surface level variationΔh based on pressure in a vacuum tank 16 given by a manometer 23 at a predetermined period and integrates the variationΔh. When L>L5 or L<L6 , a comparison part 5 further judges whether L>L7 or L<L8 or not and when not, CPU 2 reads-out integrated value of the molten metal surface level variationΔh and gives the value to a drive controlling part 7. When the integrated value of the molten metal surface level variationΔh is given, the drive controlling part 7 generates a command to raise a stroke or a command to drop the stroke corresponding to the integrated value and gives the command to an elevating/lowering controller 8 to vertically move an elevation device 15. Thereby slag surface level is adjusted to an target slag surface level.
