PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make transparent type display and reflection type display bright and to obtain high-quality images having a high contrast ratio by laminating and arranging a first double refractive transparent medium layer, a translucent reflection layer, a second double refractive transparent medium layer, a polarizing plate and a light source in this order on the rear surface side of a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device comprises the first double refractive transparent medium layer 104, the translucent reflection layer 105, the second double refractive transparent medium layer 104, the polarizing plate 107 and the back light 108 which are laminated and arranged on the rear surface of the second substrate 102. The first and second double refractive transparent medium layers 104, 106 are transparent media having prescribed optically anisotropic axes. Both of the first double refractive transparent medium layer 104 and the second double refractive transparent medium layer 106 convert the prescribed linearly polarized light to the linearly polarized light having the vibration direction of the electric vector intersecting orthogonally therewith, the former in the forward and backward path where the incident light from outside reflects at the translucent reflection layer 105 and is made incident again on the liquid crystal layer 102 and the latter when the light is emitted from the back light 108 and passes the polarizing plate 101. |
