1352620 Scarfing UNION CARBIDE CORP 14 July 1971 [15 July 1970] 33017/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division B8] A cylindrical metal bar or tube B is scarfed by rotating and advancing it through a polygonal opening 19 formed by rectilinear scarfing slots 21-24. A steel workpiece is supported on balls (32) (Fig. 3, not shown) and is fed by a skewed driven roller (37) through an adjustable square opening 19, formed by scarfing units 15-18. Alternatively, the workpiece is guided by rollers (53, 54) (Fig. 5, not shown) and fed through the opening 19 by skewed driven rollers (51). The speed of the workpiece through the scarfing units is 30-150 ft./min. for a hot workpiece and 20-75 ft./min. for an initially cold workpiece. The workpiece is rotated at 12-75 rpm. The workpiece is preheated whilst it is stationary or rotating about its own axis. |
