PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain uniform cell thickness and to make a display good by specifying the relation of thickness and Young's modulus of a substrate, the arrangement pitch of a wall-like spacer, a pressure in the case of press-sticking the substrate and the changes in the cell thickness allowed for a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: Polymer walls 40 (wall-like spacers) having the width W, height H and length B are provided in a stripe shape between a pair of substrates 48a and 48b. In the case that the thickness of the substrate 48b is made to A, the Young's modulus of the substrate 48b is mode to E and the pitch of the polymer walls (the distance up to the center position of one polymer wall 40 in the X-direction) is made to L, this liquid crystal cell satisfies the condition of PL<4> /EA<3> <=Vπ<5> /48, wherein P is a pressure applied in the case of sticking the substrates 48a,/ 48b by press-sticking in a process for manufacturing the liquid crystal cell and V is the deviation amt. in the cell thickness allowed in the liquid crystal cell. The polymer walls 40 are formed over the whole longitudinal direction of the substrate 48b and its length is equal to the length B of the substrate 48b.
