Treatment beds (16) lie adjacent to each other in a virtually-horizontal plane, making vertical interfaces. All beds are sandwiched between two parallel trenches, the inlet trench (12) being at higher level than the outlet trench (14). Preferred Features: Successive beds (24, 26, 28, 32) following the inlet trench (12) comprise granules of decreasing size. The first bed (24) is a mineral substrate and is injected with fluid permitting bacteriological denitrification. Beds are contained by an excavation (20) in the ground, sealed by an impervious sheet (22) covering its base and sidewalls. A planted layer (18) totally covers the system. One or more beds comprise activated carbon (30). |
