PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a single crystal for a magnetooptical element suitable for use in 0.8μm-1.1μm wavelength. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a single crystal of Cd1-x-y Mnx Hgy Te for a magnetooptical element, the single crystal is produced by crystallizing from melt containing an excess of Te over the stoichiometric composition, and the method for producing single crystal is characterized by utilizing Bridgman method in which the single crystal is grown from the melt by descending the crucible containing it within a vertical furnace.
