PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject opaque polyester staple fiber that can inhibit the scum formation in the spinning step by forming a film layer comprising fine particles of tin oxide and a polyester binder resin on the surface of polyester staple fiber in which a specific amount of white pigment is kneaded. SOLUTION: In polyester staple fibers in which 2.5-10 wt.% of a white pigment as titanium oxide or zinc sulfide based on the weight of the polyester is kneaded, for example, polyethylene terephthalate or the like), the staple fibers are soaked in an aqueous solution including tin oxide fine particles and a polyester binder, then, they are mechanically crimped to form the coating layer comprising tin oxide fine particles and a polyester binder on the surface of the polyester staple fibers thereby obtaining the objective opaque polyester staple fibers having the inhibitory action of scum formation. The staple fibers are spun by using the travelers coated with diamond-like carbon and the spun yarns can be obtained with abrasion of the travelers markedly retarded. |
