An automatic unit for lifting fermenting wine in a vat to submerge floating grape skins is new and comprises an auger pump connected through the shaft inside plunger tube to surface drive motor on upper end. The unit consists of a plunger tube (1) with at least one intake port (6), containing an auger pump (13) to lift wine from the lower levels of a fermentation vat and allow it to flow over the tube's upper edge (7) onto the floating grape skins. The pump shaft (12) passes through the tube and is driven by a motor (10) situated above the tube's upper end and mounted on a flange (11) with arms (9) which rest on the neck of the vat. The lower end of the shaft is set in a bearing at the bottom of the tube.
