The furnace serves for production of glass by electric melting, with the melting energy dissipated in the molten mass by Joule effect. The furnace is provided with means for delivery of the raw materials which are placed as a layer (13) on the surface of a molten glass bath, while the electrodes (15) pass through this layer. The height (h) of the bath is less than 800 mm. The ratio h/S of the height (h) to the bath surface (S) is less than 0.5 m/m<2>.
