A process to reduce the free formaldehyde content of acid solutions (I) of melamine formaldehyde resins is claimed by addition of 0.1-6 wt.% (w.r.t. melamine-formaldehyde solution) an oxidising agent (II) consisting of hydrogen peroxide, performic acid and/or peracetic acid to 5-30 wt.% aqueous solution of melamine-formaldehyde resin at pH 0.5-4.
